Description
NIV helmets are a form of Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) - a method of providing ventilatory support without intubating the patient. The helmet surrounds the patient’s entire head to supply oxygen and is sealed with a soft, airtight collar that wraps around the neck. Comparison studies show that oxygen helmets, when placed on patients in respiratory distress (but not yet needing a ventilator), reduce the likelihood of COVID patients later needing a ventilator by 20-35%. Recommendations We recommend investing in NIV oxygen helmets to alleviate ventilator demand for several reasons. They can be used outside the ICU (freeing up bed space) using wall oxygen (or BiPAP or ventilator) and are also less expensive ($125-$200) than ventilators. They also prevent the spread of aerosols from contagious COVID patients. Additional Resources:

See Addendum 1 to our EWB Playbook below. It describes our current stance on ventilation within the context of COVID-19 response. We recognize the situation is very dynamic and will adapt our view as research and response efforts progress.

A Portable, Low-Cost CPAP/BiPAP and NIV Helmet setup developed by Dr. Khan for COVID-19 patients:
Dr. Yasser Khan has partnered with several professionals from universities around the world to develop a ventilation solution that is designed specifically for use in low-income countries or anywhere that resources are limited.

- Challenges overcome:
- High-pressure/high-flow air is needed and this is not readily available in low-income countries.
- Portability to get to as many hospitals as possible, self-contained and small with all components inside the unit
- Limited availability of trained medical professionals

Bubble Helmet Non-Invasive Ventilation is a COSMIC Medical open-source project:
The helmet is a transparent hood that covers the entire head of the patient with a soft collar neck seal. This provides superior delivery of positive airway pressure with little to no air leak, substantially reducing the risk of aerosolization while maintaining patient’s comfort by eliminating pressure points on the patient’s face commonly experienced with CPAP/BiPAP masks.
