What We're Doing
In Guatemala we’re continuing to work on repairing ventilators, procure NIV hoods, and provide stable supply of respirators and filters for first-line responders.

Background
After the Volcán de Fuego eruption in 2018, Rotary and EWB responded together with the construction of seven pedestrian bridges, which provide community access to health clinics, schools, and markets. Strong partnerships were established with the municipalities, the Ministry of Defense, CONRED, and the Guatemalan Army Corps of Engineers. From this experience, we learned that together we can do more, especially in the most trying and uncertain times.
Now, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers are facing dangerous shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE), confirmed through discussions with health centers and regional hospitals across Guatemala. Rotary and EWB joined together once again to find alternative solutions and distribute PPE and medical equipment to healthcare workers on the front lines.
Within four weeks of starting the initiative in mid-March, we were able to distribute 70k units of PPE to our 12 partner hospitals. To date, we have helped launch local production of face shields, face masks, isolation gowns, coveralls, scrubs, intubation shields, and NIV helmets, as well as repair broken ventilators and address hospital infrastructure issues.

As of July 9th, Guatemala had 626 health workers among the 46 District Hospitals infected by COVID-19. Out of the 11 District Hospitals we have worked closely with, only one hospital reported a single case! The Hospital Administration credit the access to PPE as a key to this result. This shows how access to PPE and technical resources helps reduce the spread of COVID-19 while protecting healthcare workers.
